Luquillo Government Center eyed for renovations

---

Speaker of the House of Representatives Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez is seeking to rehabilitate the Luquillo Government Center, which is in a state of deterioration due to, among other factors, the impact of hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017.

“We have a vision of improving the government infrastructure of the entire eastern part of the island, including the municipality of Luquillo, that is why we visited the Government Center with the executive director of the Public Buildings Authority (PBA), Félix Lasalle, to evaluate the state of the facility and work with the purpose of identifying the economic resources necessary to rehabilitate this structure, which provides direct service to the citizens, as soon as possible,” Méndez said Thursday in a written statement.

The Luquillo Government Center, owned by the PBA (registration number 2440), is located on 14 Julio Street in the northeastern coastal municipality.

Currently, the Department of Education uses an area of the Government Center to store equipment and other materials. Meanwhile, the Department of Family Affairs, through the Administration for Socioeconomic Development of the Family, has an office space where services are processed, including those associated with the Nutrition Assistance Program and the Temporary Assistance Program for Needy Families, as well as other services.

During the tour of the building, Méndez, who represents District 36 (Río Grande, Luquillo, Fajardo, Ceiba, Vieques and Culebra), emphasized the need to identify funds to be used for, among other things, the complete rehabilitation of the sanitary services and improving the air conditioning system, as well as repairing part of the façade, lighting, and the electrical system, among other areas.
