UPR President Ferrao Delgado submits his resignation

---

University of Puerto Rico (UPR) President Luis Ferrao Delgado submitted his resignation letter on Monday, addressing it to the chairman of the institution’s governing board, certified public accountant Ricardo Dalmau.

Ferrao’s resignation will be effective on Feb. 15.

“Given the fiscal impacts and draconian measures that are coming, it is unacceptable to me to continue in office if it implies refusing a formative evaluation process that addresses the sustainability of the UPR,” Ferrao said in a written statement. “I am not willing to compromise the fundamental values that govern our institution or lead an administration that is forced to make decisions that threaten its stability and educational mission. It is for this reason that, with profound respect and responsibility, I present my irrevocable resignation from the position of president of the University of Puerto Rico, effective as of February 15, 2025.”

The outgoing president highlighted that, from the beginning of his administration, he promoted an institutional transformation necessary to guarantee the stability and competitiveness of the UPR. He acknowledged that some of his initiatives encountered resistance within the university community, but maintained that his leadership was guided by a commitment to excellent public education and the long-term sustainability of the university.

“I thank the university community, the Board of Governors, and all those who have supported our administration for the trust placed in me,” Ferrao said. “I am convinced that the UPR has the capacity and historical strength to overcome the challenges it faces and continue to be a pillar of the social, cultural and economic development of Puerto Rico.”

Ferrao concluded by stating that he will not issue any further statements about his resignation to the media.
