DNER personnel work to contain diesel spill off Salinas

---

Designated Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez announced Sunday that personnel from the agency’s Ranger Corps, as well as the Office of Environmental Emergencies, were responding to a fuel spill off the Salinas coast.

“During the morning hours, [Ranger Corps] personnel … received information related to a possible fuel leak in the maritime zone of the municipality of Salinas, in the area of La Playita, very close to the La Barca restaurant,” Quiles Pérez said in a written statement. “Protocols were immediately activated to urgently address the situation. There was a fuel spill, in this case, diesel, which is being contained in order to then begin its removal.”

“This is a very important matter that we need to address urgently, and that is what is being done,” he added.

On Sunday morning, DNER personnel were in the process of placing a floating barrier to contain the spill to enable cleanup work to begin.

According to the detailed information provided by the DNER, a 37-foot Sea Ray brand vessel with a regular registration valid until May 31 of this year, had a mechanical failure in the aforementioned area, which was believed to have caused the loss of fuel.
