Popular Democratic Party at-large Rep. Ramón Torres Cruz said Sunday that the Puerto Rico government should join with 24 states in a lawsuit against the executive order signed by President Donald Trump that seeks to eliminate U.S. citizenship for children of immigrants born in the country.
“Today I make a respectful but urgent call to the Government of Puerto Rico to join the federal case led by several states to reject the measure and its serious implications for human rights,” the lawmaker said in a written statement. “This is the moment to unite in a firm and loud demand against this public policy that is being imposed in discriminatory way.”
“This executive action represents a direct attack on one of the fundamental principles that is consecrated in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States and that clearly establishes that all people born or naturalized in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction, are citizens of the United States,” he added. “This amendment has been a pillar of the principle of equality and inclusion in American society. And it should stay that way.”
“In Puerto Rico, the repercussions of this order can have a significant impact especially in the community of Dominicans, who are our brothers,” Torres Cruz said.
