Rivera Schatz states that he couldn’t care less about a Trump statue at the Capitol.

On Thursday, Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz dismissed Governor Jenniffer González Colón’s suggestion to install a statue of President Donald Trump in the Capitol, stating that he “doesn’t care at all.”

“On the Capitol grounds, we are in charge, and no one else,” Rivera Schatz declared during his remarks in the upper chamber’s regular session. “Do we entertain suggestions? Absolutely. We will be polite, certainly. However, decisions about the Capitol are made here, not elsewhere.”

With a hint of sarcasm, the Senate president proposed alternative locations for the statue.

“Perhaps we should place the Trump statue in the plaza, maybe along the coast of Loíza, which is experiencing severe erosion to highlight the issues there,” he remarked. “Or maybe we could set up the Trump statue in some of the impoverished municipalities, folks, so they can notice it.”

Rivera Schatz firmly asserted his stance.

“So I couldn’t care less about the Donald Trump statue, it means nothing to me,” he expressed. “We are here to work, and we will not let our efforts be overshadowed by political stubbornness regarding the governor’s family, or by efforts to portray that someone here … isn’t cooperating or that we are excluding. My party was not created for that purpose.”

During this legislative term, the Senate oversees the Capitol Superintendence, which is responsible for the properties within the capitol district, including the plazas, statues, and security, among other responsibilities.
