Puerto Rico Firefighters Bureau (NBPR) Commissioner Josué Piñeiro Torres announced on Wednesday that the department is gearing up for the upcoming forest fire season, which generally kicks off at the beginning of February and concludes in August.
“Our forest fire teams are well-equipped and ready to address any situation to protect lives and property,” Piñeiro stated in a written message. “We encourage the public to implement preventive measures to avoid regrettable incidents.”
Piñeiro reported that 37 forest fires have been identified this month so far in the Ponce and Aguadilla regions, which the agency views as proof that the fire season is in full swing.
In the year 2024, the NBPR dealt with a total of 1,681 forest fires across the island.
Piñeiro emphasized that forest fires have severe repercussions, including the destruction of ecosystems, air pollution, and threats to both human and animal lives.
