Exemption for foreign airlines transfer extended for an additional 2 years

---

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has extended the transfer exemption for foreign airlines functioning in Puerto Rico until January 8, 2027, as announced by Gov. Jenniffer González Colón on Sunday.

This extension keeps the conditions initially set in April 2020, which were arranged by the governor while she was the resident commissioner.

“I am very happy that the continuation of a program I introduced as Resident Commissioner has come to fruition,” the governor stated in a written announcement. “Renewing this waiver is vital for our initiatives to establish Puerto Rico as a key hub in the Caribbean for air cargo and passenger transport. This instrument is crucial for attracting investment, enhancing specialized infrastructure, and boosting the island’s logistics capabilities, particularly in critical areas like biopharmaceuticals and medical devices.”

Secretary Sebastián Negrón Reichard of the Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC) department also shared insights on the advantages of the renewal:

“The beneficial effects of this initiative not only bolster our economy but also enhance Puerto Rico’s resilience,” he remarked. “From recovering post-Hurricane Maria to building stronger supply chains, this waiver is essential for diversifying our economy and reinforcing our leadership in logistics throughout the region.”

“The adaptability of this waiver supports domestic efforts like reshoring crucial manufacturing to U.S. territories and fortifies important supply chains under the Made in America program,” he further noted.
