The “Jangueo Seguro” initiative, spearheaded by San Juan’s Municipal Office for the Comprehensive Development of Women (known as ODIM), is designed to inform and create awareness regarding women’s rights to enjoy public spaces free from harassment or violence, particularly during large gatherings like the San Sebastián Street Festival, which lasts until Sunday.
“I commend the remarkable work of ODIM in encouraging respect and enhancing women’s rights across all environments,” stated San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo when he revealed the initiative earlier this week. “During the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, our team will be more dedicated than ever to ensuring a secure environment for everyone. This year, we aimed to highlight the importance of women’s right to celebrate freely and peacefully, without facing harassment or stalking. Our team will be vigilant and devoted to upholding these rights.”
As part of the initiative, a municipal team will visit key locations in Old San Juan carrying clear, impactful messages on banners such as: “It is NOT a complete sentence” and “Celebrating without harassment.” Additionally, campaign-themed materials will be distributed, and an information booth will be set up in the Plaza de la Barandilla to provide further details on available services.
“Our primary goal is to ensure that every woman feels safe and valued while partaking in this culturally significant event for San Juan,” said ODIM Director Valerie Rivera. “‘Jangueo Seguro’ reinforces our dedication to empowering women and fostering environments free from violence. We aim to enhance their safety and their right to complete enjoyment through education and resource accessibility.”
