House commences 20th Legislative Assembly on Monday

The Puerto Rico House of Representatives is set to launch the inaugural session of the 20th Legislative Assembly’s first regular session this coming Monday at 1 p.m.

This announcement was made by the newly appointed deputy speakers of the lower chamber, Yashira Lebrón Rodríguez and Angel Peña Ramírez, alongside District 11 (Dorado, Vega Alta, and Vega Baja) Representative Elinette González Aguayo.

In accordance with legislative protocol for such sessions, the acting speaker of the House of Representatives and current secretary of the lower chamber, Javier Gómez Cruz, will commence the proceedings. This will include an invocation led by Mizraim Esquilín García, pastor of the AMEC House of Praise Church, followed by performances of the official anthems of Puerto Rico and the United States by young singer Jeyshangelise García Pérez.

The official activities of the 20th House of Representatives will kick off with the nomination process for its leadership, which includes the speaker, deputy speakers, and spokespersons.

Rep. Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez has been chosen by the majority to act as Speaker. Lebrón, representing District 8 of Bayamón, and Peña, representing District 33, which encompasses the municipalities of Las Piedras, Juncos, and San Lorenzo, will take on the roles of deputy speakers.

Attendees of the inaugural session, which is the oldest legislative body in Puerto Rico established on Nov. 25, 1897 under Spanish rule, will include Puerto Rico Supreme Court Justices, various mayors, government officials, and community leaders, among others.

At the conclusion of the nomination proceedings, the newly appointed speaker will address the assembly.
