While the process of appointments is still ongoing, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón indicated on Thursday that agency heads who do not meet expectations will be let go.
“To me, what matters more than a title are those who effectively tackle problems for the community, those who energize the government, ensuring we don’t get bogged down by bureaucracy or excuses like ‘call me on Monday, we’ll look into it, we’re working on it, or give me a break,’ none of that,” the governor remarked at a press briefing. “Our priority must be to resolve issues for the people. From day one, my vision has been to establish a government that addresses these concerns, one that is mindful of their needs and possesses the empathy to act accordingly.”
“That’s why I am searching for individuals who will be presented to the Senate confirmation council, but you know what? I will consistently evaluate that agency leader, and anyone who fails to meet our assigned goals will be replaced,” González Colón continued. “I cannot afford to waste time and I will not retain a secretary simply because they were appointed previously. No, everyone needs to adhere to measurable standards. I hold myself accountable to such metrics, and I expect the same from my agency heads.”
Her remarks came during the fifth round of appointments on Thursday to oversee the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, the Department of Consumer Affairs, the Family Socioeconomic Development Administration, and the 911 Emergency System Bureau (refer to the related story on this page)
An announcement is anticipated on Friday regarding the appointment of the Agriculture Department secretary, among others.
