Rep. Edgar Robles Rivera, representing House District 14 (Arecibo and Hatillo), expressed strong disapproval on Wednesday regarding “the disturbing number of instances of ‘financial fraud’ surfacing in Puerto Rico, targeting cherished senior citizens who are often victimized, unfortunately, by their own children or relatives.”
“The moment has arrived to impart a lesson to those who exploit our cherished elderly,” the representative asserted.
“Do not steal from them, for you will be compelled to repay the money and face imprisonment,” he stated, adding that “as part of our legislative initiative, we will launch an educational campaign titled ‘Don’t rob those who gave you life.’”
“Currently, we are investigating a case in the Bayamón area [in which an individual] withdrew $500 from ATMs and used the funds to settle her own debts, taking advantage of her elderly mother,” Robles Rivera mentioned. “This matter has been forwarded to the Department of Justice.”
He mentioned he is crafting legislation that will impose fines and prison sentences on offenders.
“In the upcoming days, we will formally present our bill aimed at ensuring financial protection for our cherished older adults, with the goal of fighting against economic exploitation and physical abuse directed towards this vulnerable demographic,” the lawmaker elaborated.
“Regrettably, these offenses often originate from family members themselves. … The time to put an end to this is now!” he emphasized. “It is time for our beloved elderly to be able to live with dignity and safety, and to receive the respect they deserve.”
