DACO delays penalties for violations of the Single-Use Plastics Law until July

---

The enforcement of penalties for violating the Single-Use Plastics Law has been deferred until July 1 of this year to emphasize an educational initiative, it was recently announced.

“The Single-Use Plastics Law represents a crucial measure for safeguarding our environment, but we recognize that adaptation necessitates time,” Interim Consumer Affairs (DACO in Spanish) Secretary Francisco González de la Matta mentioned in a written statement late last week.

Throughout this deferment period, DACO will enhance its efforts to enlighten consumers and merchants.

This regulation, which bans the use of disposable plastics in retail settings, aims to encourage sustainable practices. Penalties for non-compliance will begin at $500 and could escalate to $5,000 starting in July.

DACO assured that inspectors will bolster guidance and oversight programs to assist businesses in their shift toward more sustainable methods, thereby facilitating compliance with the law and the protection of the environment in Puerto Rico.
