On Monday, San Juan’s Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo declared that the customary festivities to say goodbye to the old year and usher in the new will receive a temporary exemption from certain requirements outlined in the Municipal Public Order Code.
This temporary adjustment, enacted through Executive Order MSJ-061, Series 2024-2025, will permit some modifications to the rules governing the sale and distribution of alcoholic drinks, hours of operation for businesses, and restrictions on unnecessary noise.
“This initiative aims to promote a responsible and organized celebration atmosphere, allowing all Sanjuaneros and guests to partake in our festivities peacefully and in harmony, honoring our traditions,” stated Romero Lugo. “These celebrations not only provide a chance to reflect on the obstacles we have overcome and the milestones achieved but also present an opportunity to renew our aspirations for the future. As mayor, I am dedicated to making sure these events can be experienced safely, joyfully, and responsibly, upholding the unity that characterizes us as Sanjuaneros.”
Given that Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, is an official holiday, the relaxed regulations for the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages will be active from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Additionally, the authorized exemption concerning unnecessary or excessive noise will be in effect throughout today, Dec. 31, 2024, and Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025.
Despite these relaxations, the bans on selling or serving alcoholic beverages to individuals under 18 years of age, as well as providing them in original containers for off-premise consumption, remain strictly enforced. To ensure adherence to these regulations, the San Juan Municipal Police, in conjunction with the commonwealth police, will conduct regular patrols throughout the city’s neighborhoods.
