San Juan’s Mayor Miguel A. Romero Lugo has recently declared the guidelines for issuing permits, authorizations, and commercial licenses for the forthcoming San Sebastián Street Festival, expected to take place from January 16 to January 19, 2025.
These regulations are detailed in Ordinance No. 5 Series 2024-2025, with the intention of upholding a safe, structured, and enjoyable experience for all participants of this cultural celebration in Puerto Rico, according to a statement released on Saturday.
Mayor Romero Lugo highlighted the significance of preserving the historical charm and tourism of Old San Juan while nurturing community spirit during the festivities. He stated, “Our goal is to make this event unforgettable for all attendees by ensuring order and respecting our neighborhoods.”
The commercial activities regulated include the setup and use of advertising inflatables, the distribution and exhibition of promotional materials, the use of balconies for commercial advertising, temporary signage in both public and private spaces within the Isleta de San Juan, and organizing commercial parades. The mayor anticipates these guidelines will harmonize festive celebrations while upholding the city’s cultural integrity throughout the San Sebastián Street Festival.
The Municipal Permits Office will thoroughly assess each application received, requiring all necessary documentation to ensure alignment with these regulations. If the regulations are not followed, officials might refuse the permit. Additionally, officials may request clarifications or further details to meet the established safety and order requirements.
“These regulations are not an outright ban on commercial activities but a necessary and justifiable measure to preserve the security and orderly enjoyment of the Festivals. Our aim is to ensure all activities are well-coordinated and reflect the civic and cultural essence of this event,” emphasized Romero Lugo.
Official sponsors of the Fiestas and Municipal contractors will be exempt from the permit application process, as long as they adhere to the stipulations of this Ordinance, including the security protocols defined in their agreements. All promotional items must be removed by 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, to maintain the cleanliness of public areas.
