Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Núñez, the newly appointed speaker of the island’s House of Representatives, voiced his backing on Monday for the establishment of the Tax Reform Committee introduced by Governor-elect Jenniffer González Colón.
Méndez stated that the House intends to act on the recommendations provided by the committee to lessen taxes for individuals and small to medium enterprises (SMEs).
“Minimizing the tax burden has consistently been a focal point,” commented the seasoned legislator in a formal announcement. “This committee represents an essential move in that direction, and from the House, we will adopt its recommendations to achieve tax fairness for our citizens.”
Representative Eddie Charbonier Chinea also supported the initiative, emphasizing that its execution can stimulate investments and enhance the economy. Méndez urged González Colón to appoint Charbonier to the committee, as he is set to lead the House Finance Committee in the upcoming four-year term.
“The goal is to provide our citizens with more purchasing power, foster the establishment of small to medium businesses, and promote sustainable economic growth,” Méndez remarked. “This committee will facilitate a pathway for genuine change that everyone can experience financially.”
The incoming speaker underscored actions taken during earlier four-year periods, such as the removal of the inventory tax and the incentive for senior citizens.
“It is time to move forward with this agenda, ensuring that families and businesses in Puerto Rico achieve enhanced economic stability,” he concluded.
