Today, the Senate of the island is anticipated to address the nominations forwarded by outgoing Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia last week.
Following the House of Representatives’ decision to suspend the session indefinitely (sine die), citing a lack of agreement among lawmakers of the New Progressive Party (NPP) regarding 10 bills, Pierluisi modified the agenda for the extraordinary session, urging the Senate to review 24 nominations.
These nominations consist of the renomination of 14 judges, two prosecutor promotions, and eight new appointees.
“All renominations pertain to roles occupied by appointed judges whose terms have or will soon expire before December 31,” La Fortaleza indicated in an official statement.
In the initial agenda for the extraordinary session, the governor included merely 10 bills and resolutions, yet left the possibility open for amendments to include appointments that the Senate solely evaluates, such as nominations.
The eight new nominations encompass six judges, a registrar, and a member of the General Services Administration Tender Board, who was recommended by the commonwealth’s comptroller.
The NPP Senate group has expressed that it will withhold support for new confirmations but may contemplate the renominations.
“Regarding the renominations that have expired or are nearing expiration, I believe that if these individuals possess a judicial background, there should be no opposition,” stated NPP Sen. Carmelo Ríos. “For new appointments, we have informally agreed not to address them.”
A new central government administration is scheduled to assume office on January 2.
