Red Cross has assisted over 500 families affected by disasters in 2024.

The Puerto Rico Chapter of the American Red Cross announced on Monday that it has assisted over 500 families impacted by wildfires, flooding, and other emergencies from January to November 2024.

To sustain its services, the organization is calling for donations during “Giving Tuesday” today.

“As the number of disasters rises, so does the number of volunteers and resources mobilized to assist affected families,” remarked Lee Vanessa Feliciano, regional executive of the chapter, in a written announcement.

She noted that the organization has an active roster of over 500 volunteers in Puerto Rico, engaged in various aspects of disaster response. At times, they have been called to respond to as many as three incidents in a single day, she reported.

The official pointed out that the climate crisis has led to more frequent occurrences of disasters like landslides and floods, necessitating an increased mobilization of Red Cross personnel. Furthermore, volunteers from the Puerto Rico Chapter have been deployed to the mainland United States to assist during significant emergencies such as hurricanes Helene and Milton, as well as wildfires.

The organization has initiated its “Give Something That Means Something” campaign to gather funds and ensure the continuation of its efforts. Those wishing to contribute can do so via ATH Móvil in the “Donate” section under “CruzRojaPR,” or by credit card at cruzrojapr.net. Donations can also be made by contacting 787-758-8150.

Among the services provided by the Red Cross this year were financial aid to 100 families following the floods in May and the distribution of over 2,700 hygiene products to veterans at the Veterans Hospital. Additionally, the island chapter offered emergency communication services and support in critical community cases for military personnel.
