The head of La Fondita de Jesús added to Wednesday’s customary Thanksgiving turkey meal an appeal to both the new government and the community to be mindful of the needs of the island’s vulnerable populations and the homeless.
“During this season, Puerto Ricans gather to celebrate Thanksgiving at tables abundant with turkey and the happiness of togetherness,” remarked Josué Maysonet, executive director of La Fondita de Jesús. “It can also serve as an opportunity to reflect and dedicate ourselves to helping those who face challenging circumstances in their lives. Here at La Fondita, we do not forget them, and with the aid of the compassionate individuals of Puerto Rico, we can truly make a difference in their tough times.”
Maysonet emphasized that for nearly 40 years, the nonprofit organization has consistently influenced the lives of homeless individuals, marginalized groups, senior citizens, and families from underprivileged backgrounds daily. Once again, they organized a special Thanksgiving event for the homeless. Participants enjoyed breakfast, a religious service, games, and lunch was provided for over a hundred homeless individuals. A mobile unit also offered health services.
“It is vital at this moment to remind them that they are not alone and can express gratitude alongside us,” Maysonet stated. “Here, they become a part of a family, and we always wish to instill hope that we can assist them. Many have exited the streets, found housing after conquering their challenges, and are now here as volunteers. We are thankful for them and everything they do to support others.”
The director of La Fondita de Jesús urged the new government to remember the promises made to the citizens upon their election, which includes supporting the homeless, economically disadvantaged elders, and families struggling with affordable housing.
“Our people face numerous needs, and it is the government’s responsibility to provide support,” he noted. “In the Third Sector, organizations like La Fondita are eager to collaborate within necessary alliances to enhance the quality of life for our community.”
La Fondita offers vital services (food, showers, clothing, recreation, transportation, etc.); psychosocial and health services; secure, affordable housing; community organizing; capacity development; disaster assistance; and it empowers citizens while advocating for equity and social justice, Maysonet concluded.
