On Monday, Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia unveiled a multi-million-dollar funding initiative for the University Pediatric Hospital and the University Hospital for Adults, both located in San Juan, targeting enhancements to infrastructure and services to elevate medical care throughout Puerto Rico.
“The well-being of our citizens is among my top priorities. These investments are vital for updating our facilities and ensuring high-quality hospital care,” stated Pierluisi Urrutia in a formal statement.
The University Hospital for Adults at the Medical Center in Río Piedras has been allocated more than $22 million over the past four years for upgrades to mechanical systems, air conditioning, elevators, roofs, and both fire and infant safety systems. Moreover, new office spaces, a refurbished amphitheater for medical education, and a multi-level parking facility offering 380 spots are under construction.
At the University Pediatric Hospital on the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, the investment totals over $35 million, with a notable focus on establishing a new pediatric renal department costing $4 million, $2.5 million for remodeled restrooms, and a developing oncology unit projected at $4.6 million. The operating rooms are also being upgraded, and a new emergency power generation system is set to be installed.
Health Secretary Carlos Mellado López highlighted that these enhancements are designed to strengthen the working conditions for healthcare professionals while ensuring quality inpatient services.
“These investments demonstrate our dedication to those providing front-line medical care,” he remarked.
Pierluisi also revealed a $2 million information campaign aimed at promoting specialized hospital services and improving access to medical care information at both hospitals through digital platforms and social media.
