On Wednesday, the Social Work Professionals Association of Puerto Rico revealed the global campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, aimed at preventing and eliminating gender violence on the island.
As reported by the Gender Equity Observatory, over 80 women have lost their lives due to gender violence in 2024, with 38 women and girls reported missing this year. These statistics underscore the urgent need for addressing these critical issues, according to campaign committee spokesperson Mabel López Ortiz.
Set to kick off next Monday, Nov. 25, which marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the campaign will run until Dec. 10. It will feature educational initiatives and public events, along with the introduction of a Socio-Educational Guide designed to provide prevention strategies and resources for addressing gender violence.
The campaign will conclude with the Human Rights Festival, held in partnership with Amnesty International, to underscore that gender-based violence is a human rights violation. A variety of organizations and universities are participating in this initiative.
