Ferrao dismisses chancellor of UPR Arecibo

--

Luis A. Ferrao Delgado, the President of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), has declared that as of Tuesday, Yeidi Altieri Sotomayor is no longer serving as the chancellor of the UPR Arecibo Campus.

According to the UPR president, this decision was made to reestablish a harmonious and collaborative atmosphere within the university community, which has encountered escalating tensions in recent months due to inadequate communication and the handling of various important issues affecting the campus.

“In spite of the attempts made through meetings and discussions with different sectors of the university community, Dr. Altieri’s administration fell short in bridging the gaps and finding the necessary tools for effective communication and the capacity to make sound decisions regarding the challenges the institution is facing,” Ferrao stated. “These issues, which impacted students, faculty, and administrative personnel, detrimentally affected the institutional environment and collective welfare.”

He has appointed Ricardo Infante Castillo as the interim chancellor of UPR-Arecibo, starting Wednesday. Infante will oversee the administration of that campus until a new chancellor is selected.

The UPR president mentioned that this decision was made to facilitate a fresh start and to rebuild trust and unity within the university community of Arecibo. He emphasized that the central administration of UPR is committed to collaborating with all sectors to ensure that institutional processes are executed with transparency, fairness, and efficiency.

“The UPR will keep pursuing new leadership for UPR Arecibo that can suitably address the university’s challenges and foster a climate of peace, respect, and dialogue among all its constituents,” Ferrao remarked. “The university community will be kept updated on the upcoming steps regarding this transition.”
