Ramón Luis Rivera Cruz, the Mayor of Bayamón and chairman of the Incoming Transition Committee for governor-elect Jenniffer González Colón, stated that his group has requested that the administration of Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia halt any transactions that could endanger the island’s budget, which the incoming governor will take over on January 2.
Rivera urged the governor to cease transactions associated with professional contracts, staffing changes, and tenders. He noted that he has communicated with Secretary of State Omar Marrero Díaz.
The governor is planning to call a special session of the island’s Legislature.
“There is a crucial issue that this public servant has already talked about with Omar Marrero, and that is that we are seeking the cooperation of Puerto Rico’s governor, Pedro Pierluisi, and I have no doubt about it, to request the suspension of any transactions that may jeopardize the budget of the government of Puerto Rico, which the governor-elect is expected to manage after January 2,” Rivera stated.
He mentioned that the only exception to the governor’s request pertains to tenders for projects funded by federal money that are nearing expiration or any essential services that must be maintained. “For example: school cafeterias,” the veteran mayor expressed. “We need to ensure food purchases for students in school cafeterias; that is a contract that must continue without interruption.”
