On Monday, Canóvanas Mayor Lornna Soto Villanueva revealed that substantial advancements are being made in the construction of the new Casa del Veterano Municipal headquarters, a project aimed at enhancing and expanding the services available to veterans in the municipality.
The initiative has made a significant stride with the selection of ABACUS CMT, LLC for the architectural design, a prominent firm specializing in tailored solutions and facilities management.
“In the context of Veterans Day commemorations, we honor all Puerto Rican veterans, acknowledging their courage, sacrifices, and dedication to our nation,” Soto stated. “Today, we celebrate those individuals who, with valor and commitment, placed their lives on the line to protect our freedom and security. Our appreciation is everlasting; within each veteran is a legacy of honor that motivates our community.”
As part of the homage, Soto announced a significant advancement in her dedication to enhancing and broadening a range of services for the municipality’s veterans: the establishment of the new Casa del Veterano Municipal in Canóvanas.
“The new Casa del Veterano, made possible through CDBG-DR [Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery] City Revitalization funds, will not just be a focal point, but also a space for recognition and dignity for veterans and their families,” the mayor explained. “The headquarters will feature specialized assistants who will provide guidance on diverse procedures in the public and private sectors. Additionally, it will house a Counseling and Rights Program, where our legal experts will share information about the veteran’s bill of rights, housing subsidy options, Casa del Veterano services, tax incentives, and discounts at the University of Puerto Rico.”
“The [program] will collaborate closely with the Veterans’ Advocate’s Office of Puerto Rico to manage cases and ensure the rights of veterans are upheld,” Soto continued. “Moreover, in front of the headquarters, there will be a plaza and a monument honoring the Canóvanas veterans, serving as a tribute to their commitment and sacrifices.”
The mayor noted that the facility will conduct quarterly conservatories to address the current needs of veterans while enhancing community and interagency relationships.
“This initiative transcends mere construction; it is a promise fulfilled to those who have sacrificed everything for our nation and our freedom,” Soto remarked. “Every area of the Casa del Veterano has been envisioned with our heroes in mind, highlighting how we can reciprocate for their sacrifices. This space is crafted to be a sanctuary of support and respect, where veterans can access guidance, services, and the reassurance that they are not alone.”
