This week, Karla Angleró González, the Electoral Commissioner from the Popular Democratic Party, confirmed that the appropriate authorities are probing an incident that occurred among officials at the State Elections Commission (SEC) electoral operations center.
A representative from the Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC) has been assigned to look into the matter, and after speaking with Angleró, he reported that there was no reason for concern regarding PDP member Emmanuel Gómez, who was part of the incident.
“In the section where Gómez was employed, there were approximately 100 individuals managing their tasks—none of them alone,” Angleró expressed during a press conference late Sunday. “The white envelopes containing ballots are left unopened; only the yellow envelope is accessed to retrieve the ID. If no ballots are present, how can it be claimed that he took a ballot to the restroom? Moreover, there are cameras in this area and the corridors, and none capture Gómez with any ballot.”
The PDP official indicated that, as she was informed, it was the SEC chairperson who retrieved the ballot from the trash, adding that the ballot had a vote marked for a PDP candidate.
“Does anyone in a sound state of mind believe that a PDP candidate would shred a PDP ballot?” Angleró questioned. “I find it troubling how these inconsistencies clearly aim to target our official without basis.”
Angleró mentioned that the altercation began on Election Day, Nov. 5, when Gómez, representing the PDP, purportedly lodged a complaint against a member of the New Progressive Party (NPP) for a breach of the Electoral Code at a polling site.
“The investigation must examine the preceding events between the two officials as everything suggests a baseless complaint intended to overshadow the previous one,” Angleró stated. “The account provided by the NPP representative is what we refer to in legal terms as a stereotyped testimony, which addresses only the basic components of a crime while neglecting crucial details.”
