On Thursday, Genera PR announced they have secured $459 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the acquisition and installation of equipment aimed at boosting the reliability and stability of the island’s electrical power plants.
Genera, which operates the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s plants, also reiterated its determination to collaborate with the incoming administration of Jenniffer González Colón to guarantee effective utilization of these funds, ensuring a strong energy system for the island. This funding allocation was accomplished in an unprecedented timeframe of 60 days, attributed to the collaborative efforts between FEMA and the Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3), along with Genera PR’s performance guarantees.
The units intended for Costa Sur (Guayanilla), Daguao (Ceiba), Yabucoa, and Jobos (Guyama) are set to generate around 244 megawatts of energy, enhancing electrical supply during peak demand times. They are part of a large-scale generation initiative across the island, with a federal investment totaling over $2 billion.
Iván Báez, the vice president of public and government affairs at Genera PR, stated: “The allocation of these funds signifies a major step forward in our strategic initiatives and our pledge to deliver reliable and affordable energy to the residents of Puerto Rico.”
“This advancement is particularly important given the pressing need for improvements to our energy infrastructure,” he remarked, indicating that Genera PR has collaborated closely with FEMA and COR3 to hasten the project and secure the funding for this essential investment. The swift approval will facilitate the commencement of production and installation of new, more efficient backup units capable of utilizing varied fuels.
“Our initiatives will significantly advantage all of Puerto Rico; we aim to consolidate efforts with both state and federal authorities to ensure effective implementation and proper allocation of the received funds,” Báez stated. “We are hopeful for the support of elected officials as we share a common vision: to enhance the quality of life for the people of Puerto Rico.”
