Although the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) did not succeed in the gubernatorial election, it triumphed in 45 municipalities, bringing change in at least six towns.
In at least six municipalities, sitting officials lost their races to challengers, a shift that proved beneficial for the PDP.
As anticipated, the PDP reclaimed the municipality of San Sebastián after Mayor Javier Jiménez Pérez became the gubernatorial candidate for the Dignity Project. San Sebastián chose to back Eladio Cardona Quiles of the PDP for mayor, marking a notable shift after 20 years.
In Ciales, PDP candidate Jesús Resto Rivera defeated the incumbent from the New Progressive Party (NPP), Alexander Burgos Otero. This marked the PDP’s first victory since 2012.
Humacao has returned to being a stronghold for the PDP.
Following the passing of mayor Marcelo Trujillo Panisse, the town opted for Reinaldo Vargas Rodríguez from the NPP in the 2020 election, who was later convicted of corruption.
In the election held on Tuesday, the seat was won by Trujillo Panisse’s daughter, Rosamar Trujillo Plumey.
NPP contender Danny Santiago Nuñez secured the position of mayor in Villalba.
In 2020, the residents of Maunabo voted to oust PDP mayor Jorge Luis Márquez Pérez, selecting Ángel Omar Lafuente Amaro from the NPP instead.
However, Márquez has returned to lead city hall following Tuesday’s elections.
The citizens of Moca also replaced their mayor, as it appears that PDP candidate Efraín Barreto Barreto was on track to defeat Ángel “Beto” Pérez Rodríguez of the NPP as of Wednesday. The final results were not available at the time of publication.
