Don’t indicate ballots with a cross, SEC warns

---

Jessika Padilla Rivera, the vice chair of the State Elections Commission, urged voters on Sunday to avoid placing an X or any cross on their ballots, as the counting machine is unable to read them.

“Our goal is to prevent the machine from recognizing an insufficiently darkened x as an unclear mark, which would delay the interaction time between the voter and the machine,” Padilla Rivera stated in a written communication.

She explained that the machine will notify voters if it detects any issues that require correction.

Padilla Rivera emphasized that a completely filled quadrant or rectangle on the ballot is more effective for the electronic counting machine, thus accurately reflecting the voter’s intent.

“Before, during, and even after the election, the Commission is committed to ensuring a trustworthy process for voters, minimizing incidents as much as possible,” she stated. “We continue to address every issue relevant to this stage of the operations, just a day [full] prior to the final vote.”
