On Wednesday, Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia kicked off the symposium addressing economic violence, a type of gender violence that profoundly affects its victims and their families.

Pierluisi emphasized the necessity of recognizing and tackling the issue with urgency and compassion, reaffirming his dedication to combating gender violence.

“Although frequently ignored, it is essential that we acknowledge and confront this form of violence with resolve,” the governor stated in a written announcement. “Economic violence significantly undermines individuals’ autonomy and welfare, perpetuating a controlling cycle that keeps them trapped in abusive situations. It is our collective duty to eliminate it as a society.”

He expressed gratitude to the Puerto Rico Police Bureau and the compliance officer of the PARE Committee for orchestrating the event.

Pierluisi further underscored the synergy between non-profit organizations, the Banking Association, and the island’s Department of Justice in raising awareness for victims of economic violence and ensuring their protection. Additionally, he disclosed a partnership involving the Justice Department, LUMA Energy, and the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority aimed at safeguarding essential services for these victims.

The governor pointed out the advancements made by the government in the struggle against gender violence, which include the introduction of an equity curriculum in educational institutions, public awareness initiatives, and enhancements to interagency protocols. He also highlighted the enactment of laws such as Law 32 of 2021 and Law 74 of 2023, which acknowledge economic violence as a gender-based violence form.
