Teachers Association files lawsuit against Education Department for failure to act on payments

---

On Tuesday, the Puerto Rico Teachers Association (AMPR in Spanish) and its local union filed a lawsuit against the island’s Department of Education, insisting on fair payment for teachers spanning from 2014 to 2022.

“Our legal team has initiated legal action every time the legally mandated deadlines for teacher payments from 2014 to 2022 have lapsed,” stated AMPR President Víctor Manuel Bonilla Sánchez during a press briefing.

Ángel Javier Pérez Hernández, the secretary general of the AMPR’s local union, remarked, “It is our duty to highlight that the Department of Education acknowledged in the latest meeting that they have yet to begin reviewing the Teachers Career cases from 2014-2015, which is their obligation.”

The lawsuit outlines that the Education Department has failed to adhere to Law 9-2022 and the Teachers Career Regulation, and has breached the constitutional mandate for due process in relation to teachers.

“The Department of Education has not only neglected the payments and conditions stipulated in Law 9-2022, but they have also failed to provide proper notification to the teachers, infringing upon their rights,” commented AMPR’s legal counsel, Edgardo Pabón Rodríguez.
