Governor announces three days of tribute for television figure Eddie Miró

Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia announced three days of mourning on Monday following the passing of prominent local television figure Eddie Miró last week. Flags at government facilities will be lowered to half-staff from Tuesday through Thursday this week in honor of him.

“Eddie Miró became a symbol of Puerto Rican television due to his exceptional contributions both in front of and behind the camera,” the governor expressed in a written statement. “His commitment as a host, actor, producer, and writer earned him numerous accolades throughout his fifty-year career, but ultimately, it was the affection and respect of the public that he cherished most.”

“I extend my deepest condolences to his family, particularly to his wife Ita and his daughters, Dana, Michelle, and Christie,” Pierluisi continued. “Puerto Rico mourns the loss of a remarkable artist whose legacy will endure and inspire future generations.”

Born in Humacao and famously known as the man with the everlasting smile, Miró was the host of iconic Puerto Rican television shows such as “El Show de las 12,” “Super Sábados,” and “Noche de Gala,” where he shared the spotlight with both local and international performers. He was also a comedian and wrote for productions like “El Profesor Colgate” and “La Taberna India,” among many others.

His contributions to the media were celebrated in 2022 when he was awarded the Gold Circle Award by the Suncoast Chapter of the Television Arts and Sciences in recognition of his career and influence in the arts.

Recently, Pierluisi signed into law House Joint Resolution 551, which names the outdoor terrace of the Humacao Fine Arts Center in honor of Eddie Miró.
