Eddie Miró, a cherished icon of Puerto Rican television, passed away on Wednesday at 89 years old. Renowned for his charm and abilities, Miró significantly influenced the landscape of Puerto Rican entertainment.

“At the moment of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife, daughters, and grandchildren,” the Miró Medina family stated in a press release. “It is a challenging truth, but we accept it with acceptance. We are profoundly grateful for the love and respect he has always received.”

The family expressed their heartfelt thanks to the medical personnel in the Neurointensive and Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MICU 1), along with the nurses, security, and maintenance teams, for their unwavering commitment throughout the entire ordeal.

Miró had been hospitalized for several weeks following a fall.

Born on March 25, 1935, in Humacao and raised in Santurce, Miró pursued his education at Central High and graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, earning a degree in agronomy, yet he became Telemundo Puerto Rico’s most famous television host.

In Paquito Cordero’s productions, Miró led “El Show de las Doce” — a broadcast that ran for 40 consecutive years, where he also penned sketches for leading comedic talents like Norma Candal and Awilda Carbia — and “Noche de Gala,” where for 27 years, he collaborated with globally recognized stars such as Raphael, Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, Julio Iglesias, Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri, José José, Marco Antonio Muñiz, The Fania All Stars, Sandro de América, Rubén Blades, Johnny Ventura, Héctor Lavoe, Menudo, Iris Chacón, Isabel Pantoja, and Roberto Carlos, among many others.

During the 1980s, Miró was the host of the variety program “Salsa Saturday Night,” concentrating on the music genre.

He also penned scripts for successful films like “El Alcalde de Machuchal,” “El Jíbaro Millonario,” and “El Curandero del Pueblo,” in which he acted. He collaborated on screen for producers Oscar and Carlos Sacco in “Súper Sábados,” aired across the entire Telemundo network.

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón, San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo, and Puerto Rico Independence Party gubernatorial candidate Juan Dalmau Ramírez all offered their condolences.

“In this time of sorrow, I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and acquaintances of the late Eddie Miró,” González Colón remarked.

“We all laughed and cherished his charm, unique flair, legacy, and contributions to Puerto Rican popular television culture, which will persist within each of us,” she continued. “May Eddie Miró rest in peace.”

“With great sadness, I received the news of the passing of the beloved Eddie Miró,” Romero Lugo expressed. “His warmth and humor resonated with an entire people across generations through his diverse roles, making him a beloved and respected figure.”

“Rest in peace, the man with the ‘eternal smile,’ Eddie Miró,” Dalmau Ramírez said. “My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, with whom I had the privilege to work.”
