Proposal for rehabilitation of Caguas water park

---

On Thursday, Rep. José Aponte Hernández, alongside Senate hopeful Leyda Cruz and mayoral candidate for Caguas Roberto López Román, suggested the need to find a private operator to revitalize and manage the former “Moisty Skate” water park located on Garrido Avenue in Caguas.

“Caguas is strategically located in Puerto Rico for recreational expansion,” Aponte remarked. “The water park, previously known as ‘Del Turabo,’ has remained derelict since 2013. Unfortunately, a decade of neglect has left what once was one of the premier water facilities in the Caribbean in utter disrepair. This is why we advocate for the launch of a thorough evaluation process so that interested and capable companies can restore the site for public enjoyment.”

López Román expressed his aspirations “to rehabilitate this park for the benefit of all Caguas residents.”

“Considering a private operator that can upkeep and rejuvenate the venue is one of the options we are weighing,” he stated.

Aponte further stated that “[p]arks in San Germán, Aguadilla, and Salinas, among others, boast successful water facilities that attract citizens for leisure. They serve as focal points for tourism, not just for locals but visitors from outside as well. Caguas could also be part of this scene.”

Cruz, the Senate contender, remarked that the park “was established in the 1980s and brought considerable enjoyment to families in Caguas.”

“Sadly, it ceased operations in 2013, creating a void that has not been addressed,” she explained. “Leaving it in its current state incurs a monthly expense of approximately $15,000 for the Caguas municipal administration without any return. Thus, we emphasize the necessity to initiate a process for private operators to take charge of this facility and revamp it for future use.”

The facilities of the water park, also known as Parque del Turabo, span roughly 40 acres and include two pools with slides, multiple passive recreational spaces, an amphitheater, and a cable car.
