Progress & challenges of broadband program examined at DC summit

---

On Monday, Michelle Cabiya Zorrilla, the Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Broadband Program, attended the “Friends of Puerto Rico Capitol Hill Summit” in Washington, D.C., where she discussed the advancements and hurdles of the “Smart Island” initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity across the island.

“Puerto Rico continues to encounter obstacles in realizing complete connectivity, including geographical challenges, infrastructure damage, and financial limitations,” Cabiya Zorrilla remarked in a written statement.

Additionally, Cabiya Zorrilla pointed out the progress made in broadband infrastructure and how it has created growth opportunities in both urban and rural communities, particularly benefiting those that are underserved. She called on Congress to uphold its commitment to enhancing broadband access in Puerto Rico.

Established by Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia in 2022, the Broadband Program aims to coordinate and implement the deployment of local and federal funds to construct connectivity infrastructure across the island.
