Jeanette Vargas Appointed as U.S. Judge

On September 10, the U.S. Senate approved Jeanette Vargas as United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. Vargas exemplifies an accomplished public servant with Puerto Rican roots.

Vargas studied at both Harvard and Yale before moving into private law practice. She then served as a clerk for Sonia Sotomayor, who at the time was a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Following this, Vargas became part of the U.S. Attorneys Office. She worked in the Tax and Bankruptcy Unit and served as an assistant U.S. Attorney and senior trial lawyer, ultimately rising to the position of Deputy Chief on the Civil side.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) expressed her support for the nomination.  “I am honored and thankful that the Senate has taken the step to confirm Jeanette Vargas for a position on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York,” stated Senator Gillibrand. “Ms. Vargas brings over twenty years of experience as a federal prosecutor. Beyond her expertise in intricate civil litigation, she has tirelessly worked to advocate for and enhance the civil rights of the LGBTQ community. Now, as a federal judge, Ms. Vargas will apply her keen legal insight and broad experience to uphold the highest ideals of justice and equity for all Americans.”

Among the cases Vargas handled were defending the United States government against FOIA claims concerning the CIA, representing the U.S. government against Chrysler in a matter related to the auto industry bailout, and dismissing suits related to student loan forgiveness.

Senate vote

Jeanette Vargas received her nomination in March 2024. The Senate confirmed her nomination with a vote of 51-43 in a clear-cut decision without any debate or controversy.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) praised her as “a fantastic judicial nominee and a remarkable New Yorker” in his remarks before the Senate. “She embodies the essence of New York, being a proud native of the great borough of Queens with both Puerto Rican and Irish heritage. With Ms. Vargas, the Senate continues to enhance its roster of outstanding, competent, and diverse nominees for the federal judiciary.”
