DNER invites submissions for initiatives related to coastal erosion and flood management projects.

---

The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) has launched a call for submissions concerning projects aimed at reducing coastal erosion, controlling flooding, and managing runoff through green infrastructure techniques.

This initiative, forming part of the Coastal Zone Management Program (PMZC), receives backing from federal funding distributed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the budget years 2024-2026.

The solicitation seeks to foster nature-centered solutions that not only enhance the resilience of coastal communities and protect ecosystems but also offer substantial potential to minimize risks connected to erosion and flooding. Potential submissions may include projects such as wetland creation, mangrove restoration, the adoption of permeable pavements, and green roof implementations, all contributing to a sustainable future.

Selected initiatives will have access to a maximum funding amount of $186,000, laying a robust foundation for these endeavors. Both new project proposals and the expansion of current infrastructure will be welcome as long as they are focused within Puerto Rico’s coastal zone and target erosion reduction, flood mitigation, or runoff management.

The application submission deadline is Oct. 14.

A DNER expert team will assess the submissions, evaluating the proponents’ experience, the project’s quality, the clarity of its objectives, and the feasibility of the work plan. Projects that show a significant capacity to bolster coastal resilience and present innovative approaches to lessen environmental risks will be prioritized.

Those interested need to submit their documents in a digital format, either as a PDF or in Microsoft Word, to the emails pmzc@drna.pr.gov and nviera@drna.pr.gov. Additionally, hard copies of the proposals must be submitted to the DRNA Coastal Zone and Climate Change Program Office located in the Cruz A. Matos Building in Río Piedras.
