Governor urges electoral commissioners to cease complaints and focus on their duties

---

On Tuesday, Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia emphasized that electoral commissioners have an agenda aimed at undermining the credibility of the State Elections Commission.

“They are shifting blame around, directing accusations to various parties, particularly those who are responsible for the tasks at hand. The commission fundamentally consists of the commissioners and the affiliated parties,” the governor expressed in answer to a media inquiry. “Our system is structured this way, relying on each party having a designated role within the commission, with some commissioners needing to hire staff to carry out their political and electoral responsibilities. What they have resorted to is merely voicing complaints. Enough whining; it is time for them to focus on their work.”

“The electoral timeline was set back in March 2023, which is over a year and a half ago,” Pierluisi continued. “The deadlines for all procedures are already established. Hence, what I am asserting is that just four or five days remain, meaning the public, the voters, have until September 21.”

“… The electoral code saw no amendments, so compliance with the existing code is essential,” he mentioned. “We operate within a society governed by law and order. … All commissioners and parties were fully aware of the established rules and needed to take action to ensure voter registration.”

With only five days left for voter registration, which includes the reactivation or processing of voter transactions, the SEC announced on Tuesday an extension of operating hours for all Permanent Registration Boards and Temporary Registration Boards throughout the island.

The boards will be accessible to the public continuously from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
