SEC consents to investigate allegations concerning Rep. Navarro

The State Elections Commission (SEC) has decided to review a complaint lodged by Gabriel Casal Nazario, candidate of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) for House District 5 in San Juan, against New Progressive Party (NPP) Representative Jorge Navarro Suárez.

According to Casal Nazario, the SEC reached this decision unanimously this week.

The complaint was submitted on September 6 after Navarro posted videos on his social media in front of the Permanent Registration Board (JIP by its Spanish acronym), announcing the distribution of early voting applications.

Navarro’s actions breach article 12.2 of the Electoral Code, having accessed the JIP contrary to the Operating Regulations of Local Commissions and engaging in political campaigning within areas restricted by propaganda venue regulations.

“With the SEC now acknowledging the complaint, it is crucial that Representative Navarro’s conduct faces consequences,” said the PIP and Alliance candidate, who is among Navarro’s contenders in the upcoming elections. “Initially, he disregarded two SEC rules and subsequently took a stance against the directives of the organization’s chairperson, stressing that his actions were impermissible.”

Casal Nazario also highlighted the necessity of detailing in the complaint “at least one NPP official who has aided Navarro, whom he referred to as Carmencita and a member of ‘his team.’”

“Consequently, the Complaints Committee that the SEC activated via the commissioner’s agreement should investigate the actions of the representative and all parties involved,” he stated.

“In a period when the nation calls for transparency in electoral processes, those of us aiming for elected positions must set an example,” asserted Casal Nazario. “Navarro’s actions exemplify the contrary of what the country expects from those running for office.”
