Woman convicted in deadly DWI accident in 2021

---

On Thursday, Mayra Enid Nevárez Torres was convicted in the Caguas Court for negligent and intoxicated driving, which led to the fatal accident involving Justin Santos Delanda nearly three years ago.

Judge Wanda Cruz Ayala from the San Juan Court delivered the ruling that determined Nevárez Torres violated the Vehicle and Traffic Law by operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and in a careless manner.

Throughout the trial, Keven Monserrate Gandía, who was with Santos Delanda in the car on the night of the incident and sustained injuries, provided testimony along with Priscilla Carrasco Santos, the sister of the victim, who described the events that took place on November 21, 2021, when she arrived at the scene of the tragic event on the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge.

Forensic pathologist Francisco Cortés Rodríguez from the Institute of Forensic Sciences testified that Santos Delanda died due to severe head injuries and confirmed that there were no signs of alcohol or controlled substances in his system.

Prosecutor Luis David Valentín Córdova emphasized in his closing statement that Nevárez Torres had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.29 percent, nearly four times the legal limit.

Defense attorney Ramón Nevárez Andino attempted to question whether his client was indeed the one driving the vehicle responsible for the accident, while also raising concerns about alleged violations of her rights.

As per the investigation provided during the trial, Nevárez Torres was driving a Hyundai Tucson while impaired, in the wrong lane, and at high speed, colliding with the CanAm vehicle occupied by Santos Delanda, who was killed instantly, while his passenger suffered serious injuries.

Sentencing is scheduled for November 7 at 9:30 a.m.
