Jorge Ramos, recognized as one of the leading journalists in Spanish-language television for his challenging interviews with global leaders, including Fidel Castro and former President Donald Trump, will conclude his tenure at Univision at the close of 2024 after four decades with the network.

As noted in a statement from TelevisaUnivision, the organization that oversees Univision, both Ramos and the network have mutually opted not to prolong his contract, which is nearing expiration. The 66-year-old Ramos will remain with Univision through the U.S. presidential election in November, according to the network’s announcement.

By the end of 2024, he will resign his role as a co-anchor of “Noticiero Univision,” the network’s leading evening news program, which he has been part of for 38 years.

Ramos spoke about his forthcoming departure at the conclusion of “Noticiero Univision” on Monday evening.

“This choice has been challenging, sorrowful, and it took considerable time,” he expressed in Spanish. “I’m deeply grateful for these four decades. Univision has quite literally been my second home. I feel immense pride in being part of this remarkable team of journalists.”

What Ramos plans to pursue after leaving Univision remains uncertain. He mentioned on Monday that he would soon reveal his professional intentions.

“There is a lot to accomplish in journalism, and that genuinely excites me,” he stated. “This is not a final farewell. We will return here tomorrow with the news.”

Ramos has been a host on “Noticiero Univision” since 1986, as per Univision’s records. He has also been the host of “Al Punto,” a weekly Univision program featuring interviews with politicians and cultural figures. Until 2021, he sporadically contributed opinion pieces for The New York Times.

During his time at Univision, Ramos covered numerous significant events, such as the terrorist attacks on September 11, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Hurricane Katrina. He has interviewed many political leaders, including Castro and Hugo Chávez, as well as Barack Obama, George Bush, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.

Although Ramos has been a well-known figure among Hispanic families in the United States for many years, he attracted wider attention in 2015 when Trump, then a presidential aspirant, briefly removed him from a news conference.

Born in Mexico, Ramos relocated to Los Angeles in the early 1980s, citing censorship problems at a station in Mexico. He briefly worked at Channel 34 in Los Angeles before moving to Miami to join what is now Univision.

“I was just 28 years old,” he shared for Univision last year. “I had never interviewed a president or covered a conflict, and I couldn’t even fully express myself in English. But Univision became my second home. I learned how to question authority and practice journalism on the move.”

Ramos has received 10 Emmy Awards and a Walter Cronkite Award throughout his career. He is also the author of 12 books.

“I wish to convey my respect and gratitude for Jorge Ramos and all he has achieved for Univision and the expanding community we serve every day,” stated Daniel Coronell, president of news for Univision, in the network’s announcement. “As we approach 2025 and beyond, our skilled team is well-prepared to uphold the tradition of journalistic excellence that has characterized Noticiero Univision since its inception.”
