Negotiations underway for the contract of a new gas power plant in Puerto Rico

Governor Pedro Pierluisi assured that plans are underway for the construction of a new natural gas power plant in Puerto Rico, which will be convertible to hydrogen and generate 300 megawatts.

In June, the governor mentioned that the director of the Public-Private Partnerships Authority (AAPP), Fermín Fontanés, had traveled to New York to participate in meetings about the future of the new plant. Today, he stated that the design, construction, and operation of the plant are progressing, and the process is “advanced.”

“I expect that in the near future, if not immediately, the announcement of the entity selected to carry out the project will be made. Puerto Rico needs more power generation,” he said. “That’s definitely coming, and the corresponding announcement will be made in due time.”

In July, it was reported that the bid for the construction of a microgrid at the Medical Center had been declared void. Today, Pierluisi indicated that “it’s happening” and that he expects to make an announcement before the end of the year.

“The request for proposals for the microgrid has not yet been issued, but I know that the Department of Housing has been in communication with all previous bidders to adjust and modify the request to ensure it yields results this time,” said Pierluisi, noting that the Municipality of San Juan wants to participate in the process.

“That’s coming. I would think that before the end of the year, we will have a new request or an announcement,” he said.
