Jailed for Cruelty towards a Puppy

Judge Ginny Vélez, of the Ponce Court, determined cause for the arrest of a 35-year-old man accused of inciting a child to throw a puppy into the sea.

The incident allegedly carried out by the accused, identified by the Puerto Rico Police as Jesús Irizarry Padró, was recorded on video and posted on various social media networks.

The police investigation indicates that the puppy is the child’s pet, who is the defendant’s stepson, who has a criminal record for several incidents of gender violence.

The investigation was carried out by agent Luis Rosa González, attached to the Division of Crimes and Child Abuse of the Ponce police area, and agent Ensol Rodríguez, from the Guayanilla Puerto Rico police district.

The Police concluded that the man had mistreated the minor by inducing him to abuse an animal.

“My police officers are committed to eradicating mistreatment against the most vulnerable beings. Whoever hurts a minor and an animal deserves to have the full weight of the law against them,” Police Commissioner Antonio López Figueroa said in written statements.

Currently Irizarry Padró does not reside under the same roof as the minor and his mother, so it was determined that the little dog will be able to remain at home, with the commitment that they ensure his well-being.

Prosecutor Alexandra Aulet instructed to file two criminal charges for violation of the Law for the Welfare and Protection of Animals (Law 154 of 2008) and the Law for the Security, Welfare and Protection of Minors.

Judge Vélez set Irizarry Padró bail at $10,000, which he did not pay, for which he was admitted to a prison complex.
