Video: The PR power authority informs of energy disruptions

The executive director of the Electric Power Authority (PREPA), Josué A. Colón Ortiz, reported that Unit 2 of the Aguirre Power Plant has a break in the boiler that limits its production and will require it to be removed from service to repair it.

The following base or main units have been out of order and unavailable for several years: Unit 10 of Central San Juan (March 2016), Unit 8 of Central San Juan (June 2021), Steam 1 of the Aguirre Combined Cycle (October 2021), CT 2-1 of the Aguirre Combined Cycle (July 2021), CT 2-2 of the Aguirre Combined Cycle (September 2016), Steam 2 of the Aguirre Combined Cycle (June 2017) and Unit 1 of the Cambalache Power Plant (September 2011 ). This equates to approximately 574 megawatts unavailable.

PREPA is currently carrying out scheduled repairs in units 5 of Central San Juan, 1 of Central Aguirre, 6 of Central Costa Sur, 1-A and 1-B of Central Mayagüez. Units 5 of Central San Juan and 1 of Central Aguirre are projected to return to service at the end of June 2022; Units 1-A and 1-B of Central Mayagüez, as well as Unit 6 of Central Costa Sur, on or before next Sunday.

“The aforementioned scenario and given the energy demand projected for today of 2,845 megawatts, indicates that, if Unit 2 of the Aguirre Power Plant leaves at any time from today until Unit 6 of the Costa Sur Power Plant comes into service , it will be highly likely that we will not have enough generation to meet demand. This will cause interruptions in the service during the periods that we do not have enough generation to meet the demand”, explained engineer Colón Ortiz.

The executive director urged residential, commercial and industrial customers to implement measures while PREPA deals with this situation.
