Multiple people were shot Tuesday morning at a subway station in Brooklyn, New York, the city’s Fire Department said.
Fire personnel responding to reports of smoke at the 36th Street station in Sunset Park found multiple people shot, a New York City Fire Department spokesman said.
Photos from the scene showed several people tending to bloodied passengers lying on the floor of the station.
According to The New York Post, a passenger who witnessed the event while traveling on the N subway to Manhattan said there were so many shots that she “lost count.”
So far, it is known that the incident occurred around 8:30 am at the street station of the D, N and R lines in Sunset Park, in Brooklyn. At least five people have been injured and authorities are looking for a suspect in the attack who is dressed in a Chinese-colored vest and wearing a gas mask.
The female passenger identified only as Clair said she saw the man – who was described as a 5-foot-5, about 170-pound black male – drop “some sort of cylinder that was sparking on top.”
“At first I thought he was an MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) worker because I didn’t look too closely. You know, he’s got the orange (vest) on,” she said.
The New York Police Department said it was responding to reports of people being injured by gunshots or an explosion, but has not provided further details. Video footage from around the station showed an impressive display of police, firefighters and first responders.
The MTA reported that trains serving that station are experiencing delays during the morning commute due to the incident.
