Parents of drowned 12 yr old will not travel to Puerto Rico

The parents of the boy who drowned on Sunday night on the Condado beach behind the La Concha hotel, won’t travel tu Puerto Rico as they face “difficulties” traveling to the island and complying with the process of his identification and transfer to the United States. Allegedly, they are “too busy” with their other kids’ responsibilities.

The relatives are in constant communication with Captain Luis Díaz, director of the Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC) of San Juan, to whom they told him that they do not plan to travel to the island because they are in charge of other minors.

This morning, efforts were made to sign some type of authorization or power of attorney to Keith Payne, who is his coach and whom the family commissioned the minor for the trip, to certify his identity and initiate arrangements to transport his remains to Massachusetts.

They also notified by written communication that they do not want an autopsy to be performed on him.

According to information provided by Lieutenant Valdwin Alvarado, supervisor of the San Juan Homicide Division, the 12-year-old deceased minor played soccer and traveled to the island with his coach and his family on Sunday.

The Divers Unit of the Municipal Police of San Juan located at around 6:00 a.m. today the body behind the La Marquesa parking lot that is before reaching the Condado Plaza hotel, just where the search ended yesterday, about 1,000 – 1,500 meters from the place where he was last seen when he was dragged by strong sea currents.

On Sunday, the children approached the shore of the beach at about 10:14 p.m., when they were swept away by the waves. The other minor, son of the “coach” managed to survive.

Prosecutor Alberto Cuevas ordered the removal of the body and its transfer to the Institute of Forensic Sciences.
