12 year old’s body found at Condado beach

The body of the 12-year-old minor who was dragged the night before last by the current in the Condado beach area, behind the La Concha hotel, was located this morning.

This was confirmed by the interim commissioner of the Emergency Management and Disaster Administration Bureau (Nmead), Nino Correa, in an interview with Noticentro at dawn (Wapa TV).

It was learned that the body was found behind the Condado Plaza area.

“The boat of the divers of the Municipal Police of San Juan just found him,” the official reported.

“It is an unfortunate moment, but at least we can deliver the body to the relatives of the minor,” said Carlos Acevedo, commissioner of Emergency Management of San Juan, in a radio interview.

Acevedo indicated that the minor’s parents have not arrived in Puerto Rico.

At the time of the events that occurred on Sunday night, the minor was accompanied by another 11-year-old boy, who was also a victim of the strong waves, but was rescued.

This situation once again opened the debate on safety on the coasts of Puerto Rico, the lack of lifeguards, the inconclusive efforts of the government and even the impression that tourists take when events like this occur that culminate in tragedy.

After the incident, the agencies concerned and even Governor Pedro Pierluisi offered details about the steps taken by the government so that situations like these are not repeated, but the president of the Senate Public Safety Commission, Henry Neumann, denounced that he had been a year requesting booths and three lifeguards for the area.

In addition, New Progressive Representative Joel Franqui Atiles filed House Bill 1211 last week, which creates the Bathers Alert Program to establish that inns will send a message to the mobile phones and/or emails of their guests if sea conditions are dangerous.
