Two individuals were detained after a big fight broke out at Miami International Airport on Monday night.
According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, officers were called to gate H8 around 6:35 p.m. after an airport employee reported a disturbance stemming from a delayed charter flight.
Responding officers later found that a passenger had allegedly taken the keys to an airport shuttle golf cart, refusing to let the employee leave.
Video taken by traveler Mike Majlak captured a large crowd surrounding one of the officers.
The agent, who was being grabbed and pushed by the crowd, withdrew after letting go.
The Miami-Dade Police Department reported that the agent was not injured.
Backup cops finally responded to the scene and were able to control the crowd.
Two people were arrested and charges are pending.
MIA Director and CEO Ralph Cutié issued the following statement regarding the incident:
“Like airports across the country, MIA is seeing record numbers of passengers this winter travel season. Unfortunately, that passenger growth has also come with a record nationwide increase in misbehavior, like tonight’s incident at MIA. The disruptive passengers face police arrest, civil penalties of up to $37,000, a flying ban and possible federal prosecution. We have worked very hard to recover from the pandemic and make travel safe again, so that we can visit our loved ones. Travel responsibly by arriving at the airport earlier, being patient, complying with federal mask law and the airport private, limiting your alcohol consumption and notifying the police at the first sign of misbehavior by calling 911. “
