Video: Puerto Rico Surfer’s close encounter

What seemed like a normal day of surfing for surfers Jorge Benítez and Rolando Montes became an experience they will never forget.

On November 29, Montes was on Middles beach in Isabela, practicing the sport that he loves, while Benítez, who is a videographer, was filming it.

For now, Benítez realized that Montes, who is a professional surfer, sped up his pace on the board more than usual.

“At that time, I was recording a stingray that you can see on video, and that’s what I was seeing, honestly, through the camera because it’s small and you couldn’t see any detail. When I see that he – Rolando Montes – starts swimming, well I laugh because I thought he was afraid of the manta ray “, Benítez said in an interview.

However, according to the videographer, when Montes came out of the water he told him that he began to swim at full speed because behind him, a short distance away, what he saw was the fin of a shark.

According to the surfer, marine life experts who have seen the video – which has gone viral on social networks – have determined that the animal they were so close to was a great hammerhead shark about 8 to 10 feet long.

In Puerto Rico, more than 20 species of sharks have been documented off the island’s coast.
