The different vaccination centers, such as some main pharmacy chains, have already begun to give appointments to vaccinate against covid-19 to minors between 5 and 11 years of age, after the authorization to vaccinate this population with the Pfizer vaccine.
Given this, Governor Pedro Pierluisi reiterated that students must be vaccinated to attend schools in person or, otherwise, they will have to take classes virtually.
He announced that this afternoon the Secretary of Health, Carlos Mellado, will offer a press conference with details on the vaccination of these minors.
It has been estimated that there are some 227,000 minors between these ages on the Island and the expectation of Health is to have them all vaccinated with both doses before January.
“This afternoon the Secretary of Health will announce the details of the plan. Obviously, the mandate is that every boy and girl who wants a face-to-face education must be vaccinated. Of course, there are always exceptions, like medical conditions. But that is the public policy we had for those 12 years of age or older, “said the governor. “We are going to extend it to those from 5 to 11 years old and I am sure that we will achieve it because we have proven that we are the best and in this and we hope that by mid-January all the students will be vaccinated.”
According to him he said, the Department of Education could provide distance education to minors who are not vaccinated in order to guarantee the right to education.
