Puerto Rico’s Coastline could disappear by end of this Century

puerto rico coast line flood

The coasts of Puerto Rico will be underwater. This is what will happen according to Climate Central research, if earth’s temperature raises by 3-5 degrees Fahrenheit. This will happen at the end of the century if the current rate is not slowed down.

Among a total of 69 tourist spots located in North America, two of them reflect in simulated images what would happen in Puerto Rico. But the impact of the rise in sea level can be observed around the entire coastline of the Island.

Climate Central’s sea level rise and coastal flood maps are based on peer-reviewed science in leading academic publications. As these maps incorporate large data sets, which always include some error, these maps should be viewed as screening tools to identify locations that may require further investigation of the risk.

Outside of the United States, maps are based on global-scale data sets for elevation, tidal, and sea level rise projections. For the 50 US states, more accurate but still imperfect data is used.

The “tide line” is used to indicate the highest daily local tide level or, technically, the highest average high water (MHHW) line. Within the United States, the NOAA VDatum tool is used for MHHW values; elsewhere, modeled tidal increases are added to recent historical average sea surface heights measured by satellite. The tide line projections add the projected rise in sea level.

Many small island nations, such as the Bahamas, would face the near total loss of areas where most of the population currently lives, according to the study.

As an example, The famous Space Center in Houston, Texas, would be unusable and the mythical Space Shuttle Independence would have the water up to its top.

Although it is difficult to project the exact moment when this could occur, the final consequences are more evident: there is a certain amount of water trapped in the ice sheets, and when it melts completely, the low-lying coastal cities will predictably flood. Sea level rise will be irreversible, even if the planet cools.
