A woman was shot to death at around 8:10 in the morning today in a house on Gautier Benítez street, in Barrio Obrero, in Santurce, and the authorities do not rule out that it is a case of gender violence, whose alleged perpetrator was found dead.

The authorities were trying to confirm whether the body of a man identified as Winston Mercado, 47, found in an apartment on Andalucía Street, in the Pontezuela urbanization, in Carolina, is that of the alleged perpetrator. Next to the corpse the investigators found a 9mm caliber gun.

The victim, Anny Solanyi Marte, 44, entered the garage of the house and was shot in the back of the head. She died on the spot.

The woman, who was a nail technician, was Winston’s consensual partner and they had recently separated.

Supposedly, the woman had left one of her children at school and upon returning home she was killed.

Agents from the Barrio Obrero Precinct arrived at the scene after a call was received through the 9-1-1 Emergency System and received confidences about a suspect who began to be searched. While the search was being carried out, the agents were informed around 9:00 in the morning that the body of a man had been found in an apartment in Carolina.

Agents from the San Juan Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC) are on the scene and a group traveled to Carolina to corroborate the information under investigation.

So far this year there have been 465 murders, an increase of 54 compared to year 2020. According to statistics, 26 women have been murdered this year in the island. If it is confirmed that it is a case of gender violence, the woman would be the eleventh victim of femicide this year.
